4 Ways to Protect Your Smile

Learning proper ways to protect your smile can change the way you feel about your appearance. The condition of a person's teeth is one of the first things others notice about a person's appearance, and it often affects how they feel about themselves. Learning how to protect your smile also leads to improved dental and overall health.

How to protect your smile

1. Practice good oral hygiene

Taking proper care of the teeth and gums goes a long way when it comes to protecting your smile. It helps to keep dental diseases like tooth decay and gum disease at bay. These two dental issues can easily ruin the appearance of a person's smile. By taking good care of teeth, food particles and plaque are removed from the tooth surface before they can be converted into acids or tartar. Most dentists recommend brushing at least twice each day, flossing daily and using an antibacterial mouthwash. A clean mouth leads to good dental health, which leads to improved overall health.

2. Drink lots of water

Drinking a lot of water is good for your dental and overall health. It is also one of those things that is extremely easy to do. It is only a matter of developing a new habit. With so many cheap and easily available drinks nowadays, it is easy for people to drink more flavored drinks than water. Nothing beats a cold flavored beverage on a hot day, but sipping on beverages that contain sugar can wreak serious havoc on teeth over time. It is best to minimize the intake of soft drinks and to drink more water.

Water does not contain any sugars that can damage tooth enamel and it also cleans the mouth, removing any food particles and acids that are left over on teeth. In addition, most public water supply systems are infused with fluoride so drinking water can also be a good way to remineralize enamel. Water also serves a very important purpose in keeping a person's body properly hydrated. When a person is dehydrated, saliva production is reduced which leads to dry mouth. Saliva serves as a natural cleaner for the mouth, so when its production is reduced, teeth become more susceptible to the irritants in the mouth.

3. Avoid excessive snacking

Whenever a person eats, teeth are exposed to acids that are in the food. Teeth are also exposed to acids that are produced by the bacteria that feast on leftover food particles. Snacking constantly leaves teeth exposed to these threats. Sugary treats, in particular, are very bad for teeth given their acidic nature and the fact that they cling to the surface of the tooth. It is best to eat snacks near meals and then follow up by drinking water.

4. Regular visits to the dentist

Regular visits to the dentist will ensure a patient's teeth are looking their best at all times. The dentist will scrape tartar off of tooth surfaces and this improves their overall appearance. The dentist will also look for signs of any developing issues that can ruin the patient's smile.
