5 Ways to Prevent Dental Calculus

It goes without saying that brushing and flossing are essential for good oral health. However, as much as one may try to take good care of their teeth, there will always be a few things that can cause damage, like bacteria.

When these bacteria mix with food proteins, they form a sticky film that is known as dental plaque. And when plaque settles on teeth, it can lead to dental cavities and damage to the enamel. In order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, plaque should be regularly removed from the teeth and gums. If plaque stays on the teeth for extended periods, it hardens, forming tartar or dental calculus.

What is dental calculus?

Simply put, dental calculus is a rough and porous substance that forms on teeth when plaque is not removed quickly enough. This substance can make it very hard to brush and floss effectively. So, how can one prevent the formation of dental calculus? Here are five ways to do that:

  1. Brush twice a day

    The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing the teeth at least twice every day for a minimum of two minutes. It also recommends using a toothbrush that has soft bristles, which are gentler on enamel and gums.

  2. Floss daily

    Just like brushing, flossing is essential for good oral health. In fact, it is the best way to get rid of the plaque formation between teeth and prevent tartar buildup in those places.

  3. Use a toothpaste with fluoride

    Fluoride is essential when it comes to repairing tooth enamel damage. Products containing the ingredient known as triclosan should also be considered since it fights off the acid producing bacteria in the person's mouth.

  4. Eat a proper diet

    Teeth are at a higher risk of decay when the mouth is dry. Fruit and vegetables tend to increase the natural flow of saliva which in turn removes some of the bacteria and plaque from the mouth. For maximum benefit, fruits and vegetables should be eaten raw and with their skins on.

  5. Be cautious with sugar

    Sugary foods are very dangerous for teeth since they can easily lead to tooth decay and hence the formation of dental calculus. Bacteria that live in the mouth feed on these sugars and excrete tooth-enamel-damaging acids. Sugar is also acidic in nature and it eats away at enamel, even without the help of bacteria.
