6 Dental Procedures for Fixing Smiles

Your teeth are exposed to all sorts of dangers that can damage them, but dentists have a lot of treatments at their disposal when it comes to fixing smiles. Most people would rather keep their teeth looking their very best given the fact it is one of the first things others notice about someone's appearance. Having a damaged smile can lead others to assume that a person is unattractive or dirty. This article explains some common procedures for fixing smiles.

Common procedures to fix smiles

1. Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening treatments are one of the most popular treatments when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. One of the reasons is the fact that dentists have access to significantly stronger bleaching agents than those that can be purchased at a local grocery store. The American College of Cosmetic Dentistry states a single professional whitening treatment can leave teeth up to 10 shades whiter after a single session. Some whiteners used by dentists are activated with lasers.

The other option when it comes to teeth whitening is purchasing over-the-counter whiteners. These are nowhere close to being as powerful as the solutions used by dentists, but they are considerably cheaper.

2. Veneers

Veneers are thin moldings that are used to cover the front of a tooth. It is a permanent solution that can last for up to 15 years with good oral hygiene. Veneers instantly restore the appearance of teeth and they also help to keep stains away. This is primarily due to the fact that veneers are often made out of ceramics or porcelain: two materials with stain-resistant properties.

3. Bonding

Tooth bonding is one of the more affordable treatments performed by dentists when it comes to improving the appearance of teeth. The bond is matched to the color of the patient's real teeth. It is applied directly to the tooth and it is molded into the desired shape. The bond is then hardened using an ultraviolet light.

4. Crowns

Also known as caps, dental crowns are prosthetics that are used to cover the part of a tooth that rests above the gums. These devices can be used to improve the appearance of a person's smile and they are also used to protect badly-damaged teeth. Crowns are also often used with other dental prosthetics like implants and bridges.

5. Implants

Implants are used to replace missing teeth. It is the only teeth replacement option that replaces the missing tooth and its roots. Implants are inserted into the patient's jaw, then the device is given up to seven months to fuse with the bone tissue around it. Once osseointegration is complete, a crown is placed on the outer end of the implant.

6. Gum surgery

Gum surgery can be used to address a handful of issues that can ruin a person's smile like a gummy smile or receding gums that make teeth appear longer than normal. It is also used to deal with dental issues like gum disease.
