X-rays are a common part of most dental appointments with a family dentist. This is an important step for family dentists to take as it allows them to see potential oral health concerns that are not detectable through an oral examination. However, by visiting the same family dentist for all check-up and treatment visits, patients can limit the number of dental X-rays needed.
Family dentist treatment and dental X-rays
Without dental X-rays, family dentists do not know if there are any underlying issues that they can not see through an oral examination. This review goes into detail about the importance dental X-rays play in the diagnostic process with family dentists, whether or not they are necessary and how often dental X-rays are needed.
The purpose of dental X-rays from a family dentist
There are many oral health concerns that are not easy to detect through oral examination (see below). The purpose of dental X-rays is to look for signs of an oral health or general health concern to diagnose it in the earliest stages possible. This often leads to more effective and less invasive treatment. In essence, dental X-rays go beyond the visible surface of teeth and gums and look deep inside teeth at the underlying bone and jaw.
What can dental X-rays detect that oral examination cannot?
There are various types of dental X-rays, and each looks at a different area of the mouth. The purpose of multiple dental X-rays during an initial diagnostic visit with the family dentist is to look for the following concerns that are not easy to detect through oral examination alone:
- Deep dental decay
- Tooth infection
- Dead nerves
- Bone loss
- Oral cancer
- Cysts
- Jaw alignment
- Impacted teeth
By detecting these concerns in the earliest stages possible, patients often have more treatment options available to them and have a higher chance of successful treatment.
Are dental X-rays necessary for all patients?
Most family dental offices require all new patients to receive dental X-rays so that the dentist and their staff can get a better idea of the current status of the patient’s oral health. While it is possible for a patient to receive care without dental X-rays, the patient runs a higher risk of mild to severe complications going undetected by the family dentist, leading to the issue worsening and eventually causing more severe complications.
Dental X-rays are not required on every visit, although the frequency depends on the patient’s oral health. Some may require a dental visit once every six months, whereas other patients in good oral health may only need dental X-rays every two years.
