It is impossible to overlook the place of a family dentist. Through their professional assistance, oral diseases can be prevented or caught early with regular appointments. Your family dentist can be a source of accurate information on common dental procedures. Common dental procedures can be explained to you in simple words with the use of professional jargon. Have you been looking to know about common dental procedures? Here they are.
Teeth whitening
Professional teeth whitening is one of the most typical dental procedures, primarily for its aesthetic advantage. This procedure is done to remove fast stains that cannot be removed by personal dental care. It can be done at home with or without the assistance of a family dentist, and it can also be done at the dental clinic. During chair-side teeth bleaching (or whitening), the dentist protects the gums with a rubber shield or a protective gel and then goes ahead to apply a bleaching agent. The bleach can be carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Light energy from LED, halogen, and plasma arc are also used for teeth whitening.
Fillings
This is an in-office procedure done to close holes and cavities in the tooth/teeth before irreparable damage occurs. Different materials (also called fillings) can be used, including porcelain, glass ionomers, silver amalgam, gold, composite resin, or plastic, depending on certain factors. The dentist applies local anesthesia to prevent pain in the tooth, the surrounding gum, and the skin to fill a tooth. After that, the decayed area of the tooth is removed using a dental laser. An acid gel is applied for sterilization before the filling is added. Lastly, composite material and adhesives are applied for sealing.
Dental crowns
Dental crowns are artificial crowns used for replacing worn-out natural crowns. Before getting a new crown, the dentist radiographs the tooth to check for inflammation or ongoing decay. If present, a root canal treatment is to be done. After that, the dentist administers local anesthesia to prevent pain when preparing the appropriate tooth. They then use a digital scanner to take the impression of the tooth to receive the crown. The impression is sent to a laboratory, where it is used to prepare an artificial crown before it is inserted in your mouth.
Extractions
Tooth extraction is simply removing a tooth because of an infection, decay, or overcrowding. It can either be short and simple or surgical (in the case of an impacted tooth or a broken tooth within the gum. The dentist must take a radiograph of the tooth to be removed to know its state. One or more local, intravenous, or general anesthesia can be used depending on if the procedure is simple or surgical. In simple procedures, the dentist will loosen the tooth with an elevator and remove it with forceps. In a surgical procedure, on the other hand, an incision is made on the gum using a scalpel, and sometimes the dentist will have to take out the jawbone before removing the tooth.
