Cosmetic Dentistry: Correcting Misshaped Teeth
Cosmetic dentistry procedures can be used to improve the appearance of misshaped teeth. Such an issue often causes more damage besides simply ruining the aesthetics of a person’s smile. It can also make it more challenging to clean teeth surfaces, making the person more vulnerable to gum disease and tooth decay.
How cosmetic dentistry addresses misshaped teeth
Dealing with one or more misshaped teeth? Here are popular cosmetic dentistry treatments that can be used to restore their appearance.
1. Composite bonding
Composite bonding is a non-invasive treatment that can be completed during a single visit to the dentist. The process involves applying a putty-like resin to the affected tooth. The resin is then molded as desired to improve the shape of the tooth being treated.
The resin used is a mixture of plastics and glass. It can be color-matched with the rest of the patient’s teeth so the rebuilt tooth blends in with the rest of the patient’s teeth. Composite bonding is one of the more affordable cosmetic treatments used in dentistry. It can also be used to treat other issues, like chipped, broken, or discolored teeth.
2. Veneers
Veneers are cosmetic restorations that are cemented over the front part of teeth. They can be used to fix issues like stains, crooked teeth, short teeth, and deformed teeth. Getting fitted with veneers often involves removing a portion of enamel that is proportional to the thickness of the restoration being used. This allows for a more natural look when a veneer is cemented into place.
The process of getting veneers typically requires multiple trips to the dentist. The first part of the treatment is used to prepare the patient’s teeth and to create a 3D model or impression of teeth being treated. This information is sent to technicians who make restorations in a dental lab. The patient’s customized veneers should be ready in about two weeks. Patients are fitted with temporary veneers to protect their prepared teeth while they wait for their customized veneers.
3. Tooth contouring
Tooth contouring is another quick way to treat misshaped teeth. The procedure is completed during a single trip to the dentist, and it involves the dentist removing bits of enamel from all over the tooth to improve its shape.
The dentist completes the treatment by polishing the tooth to give it a healthy shine. The procedure takes about an hour per tooth being treated.
4. Crowns
Dental crowns are caps that go over the visible part of a tooth. They can be used to cover imperfections like broken or misshaped teeth. Crowns also provide restorative benefits because they restore the bite functionality of the teeth that are covered with them. Getting a tooth fitted with a crown typically takes at least two trips to the dentist.
