How to Take Care of Implant-Supported Dentures

After getting implant-supported dentures, it is normal for patients to be curious about the right way to clean and maintain their dental restoration. Implant-supported dentures are different from conventional dentures because they are fully secured to the jawbone through titanium implants. This makes them more stable and secure. Unlike regular dentures, they cannot be removed for cleaning.

Regular brushing and flossing are vital if you have implant-supported dentures. Implants are different from natural teeth. To properly care for their restoration, the patient will need to learn a few techniques.

How to care for implant-supported dentures

The primary concerns for maintaining the dentures are the same as with natural teeth. After meals, bacteria feed on the food debris left on the prosthetic teeth to form plaques, which causes decay. Brushing is the first oral hygiene measure to stop the accumulation of plaques. It is essential that patients clean the area around the implants carefully. If bacterial plaque builds up around the implants, it could cause severe inflammation of the supporting soft tissues. The reaction could be so bad that bone loss could occur within a short period.

Here is how to care for implant-supported dentures:

Brushing

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush is advisable when cleaning around implants. Patients are advised to brush at least twice daily and to avoid brushing too vigorously. Electric brushes can be useful, but manual toothbrushes lower the risk of irritation.

Flossing

There are special flossers designed for implant-supported dentures. Patients can also use unwaxed dental tape. The results of flossing are better when complemented with oral irrigators.

Mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwash is particularly effective for patients with dentures. It can be used to treat inflammation and to augment oral care if flossing or brushing is difficult for the patient.

Interdental brushes

Interdental brushes and soft picks can help to clean between the teeth. An interdental brush is effective for cleaning areas that are inaccessible to a regular toothbrush. Patients are advised to use them twice daily after regular brushing.

Professional cleaning

No matter how committed patients are to caring for their dentures, they still need to visit the dentist regularly for professional cleaning. The dentist has some special tools for cleaning the dentures. They will also examine the condition of the tissues around the implant to make sure everything is in order.

The fact is that caring for implant-supported dentures is slightly more complicated than caring for natural teeth. Patients must use the proper combination of dental tools and techniques to keep their prosthetic teeth free of plaques and prevent inflammation. It is essential to pay attention to proper oral care and be aware of symptoms of dental issues. Building a trusted relationship with a dentist will make caring for the dentures easier.

Final note

Like natural teeth, implant-supported dentures must be cleaned properly every day. If the denture structure is detachable, patients must carefully remove all the removable devices and clean around the artificial teeth, gum areas and the attachment. It is not advisable to sleep with the dentures still in the mouth. Detach them at night to avoid infections and other dental issues.
