Dental crowns are a type of dental restoration that involves placing a cap around a tooth to restore its size, shape and function. They are recommended for patients that have chipped teeth, cracked teeth, teeth that are word-worn by teeth grinding and to repair various other dental concerns.

Common types of dental crowns to consider

There are different types of dental crown materials. The most appropriate type depends on the location of the tooth and the preference of the patient. The most common types of dental crown materials are porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, metal alloy and gold alloy. Each has its own unique purpose, benefits and potential drawbacks.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine porcelain and metal alloy for a balance between durability and natural appearance. The underneath layer of the crown uses metal alloy, and the more visible portion of the crown has porcelain, a tooth-colored material that is indistinguishable from natural teeth. This makes porcelain-fused-to-metal ideal for teeth that are used for chewing purposes but that are still visible while smiling.

Ceramic

Ceramic dental crowns, also called all-ceramic crowns, are ideal for more visible teeth that do not require as much strength for chewing purposes. They have a huge aesthetic advantage, but they are not as durable as porcelain-fused-to-metal or all-metal crowns. They may also be the best option for patients that have a metal allergy. However, dentists typically do not recommend them for molars as they are not as strong or able to resist pressure from chewing.

Metal alloy

Metal alloy dental crowns, also called all-metal crowns, are ideal for molars and premolars that are used more for chewing. They have superior strength to porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and ceramic crowns, but they are not as aesthetically pleasing and do not match the shade of natural teeth perfectly. Of course, this is less of a concern for teeth further back in the mouth, but they are not ideal for more visible teeth.

Gold alloy

Gold alloy crowns are less popular since they are more noticeable than porcelain or metal alloy and are often more expensive. However, many dentists offer gold alloy and some patients prefer it as it does offer exceptional durability and a unique appearance. Like metal alloy, gold alloy is ideal for molars and premolars, rather than more visible teeth.

How to choose the best dental crown material

The best dental crown material option depends on the location of the tooth, the recommendation by the dentist and the patient’s preference. For those who want a more aesthetically pleasing option, ceramic crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal may work best, whereas those who want superior strength and durability may prefer metal alloy or gold alloy dental crowns.
