Why a Family Dentist Requires Regular Cleanings

Family dentists encourage regular cleanings once every four to six months to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of teeth and along the gum line. They play an important role in the prevention of oral health concerns such as cavities and gum disease.

The importance of regular cleanings from a family dentist

Regular cleanings from a family dentist are a preventive treatment method that can keep the teeth healthy, ensure a beaming smile and reduce dental costs long-term. The following is a review of what regular cleanings are, why they are important, what they protect against and how often they are necessary.

What are regular cleanings from a family dentist?

A regular cleaning from a family dentist is a common dental appointment that involves scraping away the plaque and tartar from teeth enamel and along the gum line. Regular cleanings are relatively non-invasive and patients do not experience discomfort during the procedure. The primary purpose of regular cleanings from a family dentist is to prevent oral health concerns and teeth stains. They are most often covered by insurance and can save the patient the need for more extensive treatment in the future.

Why are regular cleanings from a family dentist important?

Regular cleanings from a family dentist are highly beneficial and reduce the risk of oral health concerns that can be costly and invasive to treat. In addition to saving money and preventing the need for an invasive procedure to repair issues such as deep dental decay, periodontitis and tooth loss, regular cleanings also offer a way to receive an oral examination to detect concerns such as signs of bruxism, jaw complications and oral cancer in the earliest stage possible.

What do regular cleanings help protect against?

Regular dental cleanings are a preventive treatment option intended to reduce the risk of other oral health concerns. Oral health concerns they protect against include but are not limited to:

  • Weakened enamel
  • Dental cavities
  • Oral infection
  • Gum disease
  • Teeth stains

Since the procedure is performed for preventive reasons, it is recommended for all dental patients, regardless of the status of their oral health. Patients that have a more severe case of gum disease known as periodontitis may require a more extensive cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing.

How often do patients need a regular cleaning?

Family dentists encourage regular cleanings once every four to six months (two to three times each year). The visit for a regular dental cleaning is not invasive and only takes an hour or less. During the visit, the family dentist will also conduct an oral examination and may order dental X-rays if it is the patient’s first visit or if they have not received new dental X-rays in over a year.
