Your Family Dentist Suggests When to Seek a Dental Restoration

A family dentist uses dental restorations to fix a wide range of dental issues. Many of these restorations have cosmetic and restorative benefits, so patients get to address dental issues while improving the way that their smile looks. Issues that can be fixed with restorations include:

  • Stained/discolored teeth
  • Chipped, fractured, or broken teeth
  • Deformed teeth
  • Short teeth
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Tooth decay

Reasons that a family dentist might recommend a restoration

Reasons that a family dentist might recommend getting a dental restoration placed on your teeth include the following.

1. Tooth decay

Tooth decay is caused by acids made by oral bacteria damaging teeth structures. These acids create small holes called cavities that penetrate into the tooth’s inner layers. A dentist might recommend restorations like onlays, inlays, fillings, or crowns to help fix such damage.

Tooth decay can compromise a tooth’s pulp chamber or cause it to break apart when left untreated. A tooth with an opened pulp chamber will need treatments like a root canal to clean out the area before covering it up with a crown.

2. Unresponsive stains

Teeth whitening treatments are the standard way to get rid of stains and discoloration on teeth, but these treatments are not effective on stains caused by fluorosis, decay, or tetracycline antibiotics. A family dentist might recommend covering these types of stains with restorations like veneers or crowns. If the rest of the patient’s teeth have stains that can be removed with a whitening treatment, it is performed before placing a restoration on the teeth because such treatments do not improve the color of restorations.

3. Damaged teeth

Dental restorations can be used to cover up severely damaged teeth. For example, a broken tooth can be covered with a crown to protect it from further damage. The crown holds the remnants of the tooth together and prevents acids and bacteria from reaching them. It also protects the tooth from bite forces and restores its aesthetics. Severe damage to a tooth that leaves its pulp chamber compromised might require root canal therapy to fix the tooth before covering it with a restoration.

4. Misaligned teeth

Dental restorations like veneers can be used to address poorly aligned teeth. Dentists often recommend this approach when the patient has other issues that require veneers. Veneers serve as masks that hide flaws on teeth’s front-facing sides, so they can be strategically placed to make a person’s teeth appear straighter.

Covering teeth with veneers requires removing enamel from its front. It is irreversible, so the patient will always need veneers on their teeth to serve as artificial enamel. More severe teeth alignment issues can be fixed with oral appliances like braces and clear aligners.
